🔧Edit and Inpaint

After "Advanced Controls" these are two tools every Udio user with access should aspire to master!

Edit and Inpaint are tools used to manipulate and change a clip without extending it. Inpaint is the legacy version of the tool whereas Edit is a newer version of the same idea. This said, they do differ mechanically at current, and seem to have different purposes for which they excel, so in many cases it is actually best to use them in tandem.

Edit

Edit is a manipulation tool that allows you to alter parts of your song clip without having to extend the song in question. You can use it to change instrumental features, vocals, or both at the same time. This can be used to "correct" sections that didn't go the way you wanted, or you can use it to "reroll" a section of your song to see if you can get a rhythm or delivery that's more to your tastes. Clever use of Edit can be used to create interesting features in your songs due to the fact it only changes a select portion of the song in tandem with the fixed relatively small context window.

Before we get into the how, some core things we need to understand about Edit:

  • Edit has a fixed context window of 28 seconds, which means if you're changing a fudged chorus in the hopes to make it imitate an earlier chorus, if that chorus is more than 28 seconds before the section you're fixing, it's unlikely to sound exactly the same!

  • Edit cannot refer to the song you're selecting to be changed when deciding how to replace the song, so you need to be mindful of how much you select in one chunk as too much will give it very little context to work off and it may result in incoherence. Of course, you may wish to purposefully exploit this.

  • There are two forms of Edit: Replace Section and Edit Lyrics. The first option essentially changes everything in the given section, instrumentals and vocals. The second option will attempt to change the vocals whilst keeping the instrumentals behind them as unchanged as possible.

You access Edit from the library or core song page, under "Edit" subheadings. Whether you click Replace Section or Edit Lyrics doesn't really matter as you can swap between them on the Edit page:

Inpaint

Inpaint is the legacy version of Edit. It works in a very similar fashion with a few different details (and features)

  • Inpaint allows you to select multiple "editing windows" within your 28 second "playground". Allowing you a maximum of 4 discreet sections to edit, with gaps between them if you like. Song sections between these selections will remain unchanged.

  • The setup for Inpaint is ever so slightly more fiddly than Edit, but if you do it correctly it's extremely consistent.

Inpaint is accessed through the Edit subheading on the triple period menu on the library. The page you will be navigated to will look almost identical to the Edit one with a few small differences, but the general "select which part you're editing" is very similar, with slightly different preparation we'll look at now.
