🌱Seed

Seeds are an advanced "Advanced Control". They are a way to capture certain themes, grooves and elements and reuse them or try to recreate a similar, but not identical clip again.

Every clip in Udio has a seed, this is a random string of digits which essentially identifies specific interpretation patterns for the clip. So for example we could have ALL settings in advanced controls identical across two clips, but one clip is seed 42500 and the second is seed 995207429. They will sound different in all likelihood because the different seeds are essentially different "interpretations" of the same set of settings.

Seeds have neglibile impact when not using manual mode.

The Udio default is for the AI to randomly assign you a seed (the -1 setting). You can manually set a seed yourself if you like by typing into the box.

If you keep all settings the same in manual and generate another clip with the same seed the two clips will be identical. Altering the seed by even a single digit will change the outcome of the generation.

Seed theory and which seeds produce which effects (precisely or within ranges) is a HUGE topic within Udio due to the amount of possible seeds there are. This is something that is examined in Knowledgebase, but it's a massive area and even with what is known, there's still lots more to discover.

Generally speaking however though a general observation is if you keep seeds very close to each other but not exactly within a certain range, they will be somewhat similar in ways. At certain ranges though, that will change. See the example below to illustrate:

Seeds 1 - 7 all carry a similar vibe and sound

Seeds 8 - 11 carry a similar sound, but this sound is different to Seeds 1-7

Seeds 12-21 carry a similar sound, but this sound is different to Seeds 1-11

Seeds 22-23 carry a similar sound to Seed 5

and so on (the above is an example, do not take it literally!).

Manually entered seed strings can be limitless in length. This gives an idea of the crazy amount of variation possible in the model. There is debate about whether the digits beyond a certain number have an effect or not, but it is certainly recognised strings over 10 digits continue to produce audible effects. Even if we were only considering 10 digit seeds, that alone is 10,000,000,000 possible combinations (and this ignores all seed combinations for strings of 1-9).

If you're using the random seed setting, Udio will never pick a Seed with more than 10 digits.
